Ads that bit the dust, part 1

December 13, 2011 at 1:37pm by Nellie Kim

It is with great pride that I present to you the first installment of Ads That Bit the Dust.  And by "Ads" I mean "ad-like objects that at the time seemed like a drop of Dawn in the pool of midnight oil" and by "Bit the Dust" I mean "never saw the light of day and eventually ended up in a paper-mache-like object".

Luckily, my art director instincts kicked in before this gem kicked the curb, and I scanned the thing. Perhaps I subconsciously knew that one day it would be resurrected for all the internets to see.

This one comes to you from the 2006 archives – a concept for a print ad to launch a new alcoholic beverage comprised of a whole lot of rum, and a little bit of tequila. Ready?  "A little Mexican with your rum."  I know. I know. Pretty genius, right?

We eventually made it to set and actually scouted a 4'8" Mexican man working in the depths of the back kitchen of Margarita's. Chris H. and I made negotiations in our broken Mexinglish between bites of our delicious enchiladas. It seemed so perfect, like the tequila gods were smiling down on us that day. The photoshoot went great. Photos were taken on film, and we were excited to make selects once the film came in.

Well, somewhere between shooting and making selects, the media buy got canned. Or the actual product got canned.  I'm guessing the latter, since I haven't seen a bottle of it since.  Needless to say, the ad never got completed and the photos were never seen. All that remains of this idea is this scan, this blog post in-loving-memory-of, and a contact for a little Mexican man that makes a mean enchilada somewhere on Baldwin St., if you should ever need one.
